A drought in a picture This is a photo of Mt. Shasta in California. This volcano typically, at this point in the year, is covered with a whole lot of snow. Usually almost the whole peak will be snow-covered during the winter. Instead, the mountain is mostly bare. The snow cover is about 1/3 as much as typically found on the volcano at this time of the year. Much of the state of California is in a multi-year drought and thus far this year is no different. Reservoirs that rely on snowpack from these mountains are at less than ½ of their capacity and so far, the snow isn’t there to replenish the reservoirs this year. -JBB Image credit:http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=82859
