This is a photo of a massive congregation of Munkiana Devil Rays; relatives of the Manta Ray, in the sea of Cortez, Baja California, in Mexico. The photo was captured by a German photographer named Florian Schulz, who has dubbed this image “The Flight of the Rays”. The picture has only captured a quarter of the whole scene and it is important to note that aside from the ones visible at the in the photo, there are many more below the surface! It is unclear as to why this congregation occurs; it could be to mate, herd prey, migrate, or maybe, just a social gathering! This image won the “Underwater World” category in the 2010 Environmental Photographer of the Year awards in National Geographic- and deservedly so! -Jean
